Frequently Asked Questions about Summer CAMP

The Nature Nurture website is experiencing serious glitches in its registration process. Our apologies.
Please email or call Nature Nurture founder, Linda Constant to register. 10% discount off session rate for all email and phone in registrations until our website challenge is resolved.
We are sorry to say that the answer to this is not yet decided/confirmed one way or the other.

Rather than canceling our regularly scheduled Summer CAMP 2020 program at this time, we are placing it in a 'holding pattern'. We are offering our Online KIDS-in-Charge CAMP as a place-holder for Outdoor CAMP in the event Outdoor CAMP doesn't happen. (See FAQ What is KIDS-in-Charge CAMP?)

That being said, in light of this week's updated guidelines, we realize it is possible that we may be able to hold CAMP as previously scheduled: OUTDOORS !

For those already registered, even if you have asked for and/or received a refund or credit for future classes, we are holding your child's spot as originally scheduled. This way, whether we have Outdoor CAMP or Online KIDS-in-Charge CAMP, your child's spot is secured. (There is no obligation on your part; we simply want you to have the option to keep your original plans).

If you know you will not be interested in your child attending Nature Nurture Summer CAMP (Outdoors or Online) this year (because your plans have changed), please let us know and we will open that spot up for another child to join.

We realize other camps are going ahead with summer camp, and wish we could offer the same at this time. However, we are taking extra precaution and waiting until we are closer to the time NN CAMP is scheduled to start: June 8th. We apologize profusely for this decision, as we realize it may very well interfere with your efforts to plan ahead.

Nature Nurture's KIDS-in-Charge Online CAMP has been added as a place-holder in the event your child's Outdoor CAMP week does not happen.

For information about KIDS-in-Charge Online CAMP, please see our Frequently Asked Questions.
KIDS-in-Charge Online CAMP is a placeholder for our regularly scheduled all-outdoor Summer CAMP 2020 program.

The focus and goal of KIC is for children to ‘connect’ with one another and enjoy the moments vs creating man-made projects, as one might find in other camps, including nature related camps.
With respect to the camp’s name: KIDS-in-Charge, we will be giving each child the opportunity to ‘be in charge’… picking the games, stories and/or songs throughout our time together.
We will be playing word games, talking with one another and sharing ideas. There may be some photos and perhaps short video clips with teacher Linda out in nature, pictures from books and certainly games and open-ended dialogues around the pics, video clips and books with nature themes, however, our primary goal is for the children to ‘connect’ with one another, have FUN and as always, continue enhancing, learning and practicing being kind (good character) to nature, others and themselves.

Two campers/CAMP Monday to Fridays
Teacher Linda and One Jr. CAMP Leader or CIT
Up to one hour/CAMP session (whatever works for your child)

9:00 - 10:00 for morning camps (ages 3-4s)
1:00 - 2:00 for afternoon camps (ages 4-6s)

All virtual CAMPS are set up for two campers max* and one Jr. CAMP Leader or CIT (age 7-17)

Teacher Linda*1 leads CAMP and stays in Zoom meeting for the full hour

If there is a Jr. CAMP Leader or CIT, s/he will co-lead and stay in Zoom meeting for full hour

Children have option to pop in and out of meeting during
   -each day of CAMP session
-each week of CAMP session (meaning they can join in all 5 days, 4, 3 or even just 1)

The reasoning behind ‘the pop-in, pop-out option’ is so children are respected for their developmental stage and age when it comes to being in a virtual meeting

There will be a leniency on NN’s ‘no man-made materials’ philosophy in KIC (The reasoning behind this is the same as the pop-in, pop-out option: to respect children for their developmental stage and age when it comes to being in a virtual meeting)
Virtual KIDS-in-Charge CAMP
Two to four campers/CAMP Monday to Fridays

teacher Linda and One Jr. CAMP Leader or CIT

up to one hour/CAMP session (whatever works for your child)

Yes, with one week's notice in writing and as long as there is availability in the week that you want to switch. Families may request one session transfer per summer at no charge. For each additional transfer, there will be a $15 administrative fee. Nature Nurture CAMP is always held regardless of the number of children enrolled. We find the positive in this scenario by offering the child or children enrolled the opportunity to help choose our location and adventure for the day, as well as specific games they enjoy, stories to be told, etc. Our aim, as always, is to provide individual attention and opportunities that match each child and group's interests, regardless of size of camp.

3 hour drop off.

We spend all time outdoors filled with adventures, exploration, safety, fun and respect.

Clothes

It is recommended that all children, and any accompanying adults on our nature walk* wear the following:

long pants (even on warm days...see NOTE below)
closed-in shoes
socks
shoes with a good waffled sole
jacket
brimmed hat (helps on chilly days and shades eyes from sun)
sunscreen

NOTE: long pants, closed-in shoes and socks help prevent risk of being scratched by thorns on low-lying plants while meandering through the forest, hills and fields, the occasional poison oak and the predictably unpredictable weather of San Francisco ... and the Presidio :-)

* we sometimes encounter poison oak on and near the trails, as well as prickly plants.

Snacks

Please send your child in with a small, healthy snack. (Please note we honor a NO-NUT policy in all Nature Nurture classes).

Backpacks and Toys     LIGHTEN THE LOAD .  Like you, we care about healthy backs!

It is recommended that children bring their snack, sweater or jacket in a backpack that is as light as possible for them to carry. At Nature Nurture, although children carry their own backpacks while walking to and from our destinations, we invite and encourage children to take their backpacks off when they are exploring, building, playing, having snack, etc once we've arrived. Teachers will also carry children's backpacks from time to time to give children a break.

To keep with our mission of children connecting with the earth, natural environment and their peers, we have a 'no toys' rule at Nature Nurture for all classes except our 'seedlings' class for ages 2-3s during our school year sessions. Of course, we also make exceptions at Nature Nurture and if your child needs/wants to bring a special item or toy (non-plastic, please), stuffie or small blankie each week that helps him or her feel safe and comforted, that is 100% fine with us. We aim to avoid having children bring toys to be played with, however, understand children sometimes need to have a familiar and comforting item to hold and/or simply have nearby in their backpack.

BENEFITS and Description

The first thing we want for all Jr. CAMP Leaders (ages 7-14) and CITS (ages 15-17) is to simply be present and have FUN. At NN, we believe that by taking care of ourselves first (hint: being mindful about our own Safety, making sure we are having FUN and showing Respect to ourselves...and being in the moment), we are then best able to take care of others.

Teachers are trained and skilled in Nature Nurture's 'open heart and mind policy' and encourage all Jr. CAMP Leaders and CITS (as well as, of course, campers) to speak up and ask for what they want/need.

At the beginning of each CAMP day, the Jr. CAMP Leader or CIT and NN founder, Linda Constant, will meet and co-choose that day's location for our adventure, using thoughtful, decision-making skills based on the weather, children in the class, their energy, disposition and needs for the day as well as review the three core principles of NN: Safety, FUN and Respect for nature, others and ourselves. In addition, they will have the opportunity to discuss leadership topics they are interested in, such as goal setting and decision-making.

At Nature Nurture we understand that all children are different and that some may be ready and interested in partaking in some and not other parts of the following benefits and description of the Jr. CAMP Leader and CIT program. Truly it is an opportunity for growth, yet the most important aspects are being SAFE, helping to keep the children SAFE, having and showing RESPECT and, of course, having FUN!

NN Jr. CAMP Leaders (ages 7 -14) and CIT's (ages 15-17) are offered a wonderful all-outdoor, community-based opportunity for personal growth and learning while having a positive impact on younger children (ages 3-6) from their own community. Jr. CAMP Leaders and CITS are mentored by Nature Nurture founder, Linda Constant, to aid in their development of personal and leadership qualities such as confidence, organization and more, as well as Nature Nurture hallmark traits such as mindfulness, good character and social awareness coupled with its three core principles of Safety, FUN and Respect for nature, others and ourselves.

In addition to the above, Jr. CAMP Leaders and CITS will gain experience for future CIT roles and employment and the potential (if they are interested) to learn about the ins and outs of entrepreneurship and what it means to have responsibility for a successful business, the classes and most importantly the children.

FOR CITs:  In addition to the tasks and opportunities given to Jr. CAMP Leaders, CITs are instructed in the methodology and philosophy of Nature Nurture and given the opportunity to lead classes under Nature Nurture founder's guidance and support.
